Insect monitoring in ARTIS, a test with DIOPSIS

Sept. 17, 2024

Naturalis is working with three other organizations (University of Amsterdam, University of Twente and Westerdijk Institute) on ARISE, a national research infrastructure for identifying all species in the Netherlands. The DIOPSIS camera is used in this program as one of the innovative sensors for insect identification and monitoring.

ARISE is collaborating with ARTIS Zoo in Amsterdam to test and demonstrate several new monitoring techniques. In addition to the DIOPSIS cameras, we are also working with other (prototype) insect cameras, wildlife cameras, radar combined with a camera and nesting boxes with cameras. By testing different types of insect cameras, we can compare the results of the DIOPSIS camera with other insect monitoring techniques.

Right: the DIOPSIS camera and InsectDetect camera being tested for insect monitoring.

For ARISE and DIOPSIS, the collaboration with ARTIS is fantastic. This allows different techniques to be tested in a safe environment, but also allows us to inform a large audience about these new ways of biodiversity monitoring. An information board has been developed for each sensor that provides more information about the research and the different sensors. In addition, the project is also included in tours and activities through the park. So next time you are in ARTIS, take a good look around so you can see these systems in action for yourself!
